Lonaconing Maryland is located along the Georges Creek Valley between Frostburg and Westernport in Allegany County. Lonaconing is steeped in in rich history. The town is home to the Georges Creel Regional History Exhibit and displays many artifacts as well as proudly announcing Lonaconing as the birthplace of Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Robert (Lefty) Grove. Another area attraction is the Iron Furnace used in the 1830’s, an impressive structure that helped shape the areas future on industry. Now on the National Register of Historic Places the Lonaconing blast furnace is a 50’x50’ sandstone pyramid that harnessed the power of coal to produce iron. Lonaconing has to the last known existing intact silk mill in the USA which is now in the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The building has been abandoned for roughly 50 years, but draws plenty of historians, tourists, and photographers alike.
