Friendsville Maryland, known as ‘the friendliest town in Maryland’, is located in the North-Western part of Garrett County. It is one of Garrett County’s oldest settlements and has just installed an interactive 18 marker walking tour that elaborates on the people and events that shaped the town. Friendsville received its name from an early European settler named John Friend, who came to the area before the Revolutionary War.
The exquisite Youghiogheny River flows through the town providing a world class spot for white water rafting, fishing, and kayaking. Pristine hiking and biking trails, community parks, and several adventure sport companies keep this community active and healthy. Friendsville enjoys cool mountainous summers, as temperatures have only ever reached a record high of 92 degrees. The outdoor fun does not repose in winter as snow enthusiasts can enjoy snowshoeing, snow tubing, and downhill skiing at the Wisp Resort located close by.
As a small town with huge charm, Friendsville prides itself on being walkable to many amenities and events. Ideally located, Friendsville seems far enough away yet close enough from everything. Friendsville is 45 minutes from West Virginia University, 3 hours from Washington D.C. and 2 hours from Pittsburgh, PA. This convenient local allows you to enjoy several different cities at your leisure but enjoy a quiet small town lifestyle.
