Bedford, PA

Bedford is located in picturesque South-Central Pennsylvania. Incorporated in 1795, Bedford was a frontier military post for many years and the (now reconstructed) Fort Bedford served as a refuge against French soldiers and hostile Native Americans. The town is historically significant as George Washington called almost 13,000 militiamen to Bedford during the Whiskey Rebellion to make a statement against impending anarchy and a rebel uprising.

Medical hot springs and a new spa built in 1804 drew many notable people to the area including several presidents and congressmen. In fact, President James Buchanan made the Bedford Springs Hotel his “summer White House” and made the first trans-Atlantic cable message from his room in 1858.

Everyone is welcome at the annual Bedford County Fair where locals can exhibit their 4-H projects, ride rides, play games, and watch demolition derbies on a the speedway. Bedford’s annual Fall Foliage Festival attracts people from many miles around to see the celebration and awe at Mother Nature’s grandeur. Bedford is also home to several resorts that boast spas, golfing, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, skiing, snow tubing, ice skating, and wine tasting.

Bedford citizens are very friendly; in fact, many families reside here from generation to generation. Among many other employment opportunities, Bedford has both a Wal-Mart and REI distribution center close to its location, providing employment to many people in Bedford and the surrounding areas. With so many special events and entertainment, Bedford is a great place to live, work, and play.

Barton, MD

Barton, Maryland is an adorable township located between Lonaconing and Westernport along the Georges Creek Valley.  The Reverend William Shaw, a Methodist minister settled on this picturesque site of Allegany County in 1794. His son, William Shaw Jr. laid out the town in 1853, naming it for his father’s hometown: Barton, England.

Shortly after settlement, the discovery of coal in the area shaped Barton’s future. The Georges Creek Rail Road and many settlers came to the area to work in the rich mines and Barton flourished. Today most of the coal miners have vacated and many of the families are supported by other types of employment such as farming and manufacturing.

Barton is listed on the National Register of historical places with Shaw mansion being added in 1985. Barton is noted for having the first gristmill powered by a water wheel. Several mills were added along the Moores Run River in Barton, however they were all torn down by 1961.

You can still see the rich history of this town in its topography and through its resilient people.  In 2016 the Census reported the population of Barton was 431 people. This statistic truly speaks about Barton’s small town charm. As a modest community in a serine mountain setting, Barton’s locals are genuine and neighborly.  An annual parade through town celebrates the citizen’s congenial community spirit and can-do attitudes about their hometown.

Deep Creek Lake Area

Located in Garret County MD, the Deep Creek Area encompasses many towns including McHenry, Oakland, Swanton and Mountain Lake Park.  These diverse communities surround Maryland’s largest man-made freshwater lake. The 3,900-acre ‘Deep Creek’ Lake has 65 miles of shoreline and is nestled in the Allegheny Mountains 2,466 feet above sea level just west of the eastern continental divide.

Forested slopes and the highest point in Maryland rise all around the area to peaks in excess of 3,000 feet adding to its picturesque qualities. Deep Creek summers are significantly cooler than in the surrounding lowlands. Because of the elevation, spring arrives a little later and the forests shine with brilliant green. Autumn comes a little earlier, and the foliage is an eruption of red, gold, russet, and tans.

The unique geography of Deep Creek enables it to offer an abundance of outdoor activities as well as spectacular views. Lake visitors can enjoy a marina, a state park and the Wisp Ski Resort which is a popular vacation destination year round. Along with skiing (snow and water), snow tubing, boating, camping, hiking, educational nature programs, bird watching, adventure tours,  expeditions and a nature center, Deep Creek would be any outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

Deep Creek is also home to many specialty restaurants, cultural festivals, live entertainment, fairs, and numerous cultural activities like the gathering of the Scottish clans.  For the less outdoorsy type, the Deep Creek area is a great place to shop, dine, relax and simply unwind.

With unbelievable views and limitless pastimes and amusements the Deep Creek area is the perfect destination for your next dream home or vacation property.  Shop Now!
